Migraines

A migraine is a severe headache, it is throbbing or pulsating and usually on one side behind the eye, can be associated with nausea, vomiting, depression, sleep disruption and sensitivity to light, sound, and smells. Attacks are often recurrent and affect younger crowds more. Females suffer migraines more often than males do.

There are many things that may trigger a migraine including:

  • Alcohol (e.g., red wine)

  • Environmental factors (e.g., weather, altitude, time zone changes)

  • Foods

    • Caffeine (coffee, chocolate),

    • Monosodium Glutamate (MSG)

    • Nitrates (processed foods, hot dogs, bacon, lunch meat)

  • Glare and Contrasting patterns

  • Hormonal changes in women

  • Hunger

  • Lack of sleep

  • Medications (over-the-counter and prescription)

  • Perfume

  • Stress (home, work, finance)

  • Exertion

There are many things you can do to help the severity of a migraine including the following:

  • Putting a cold compress on your forehead or behind the neck

  • Massaging the ears and ear lobes

  • Massaging the "crown" of your head -- the ring of muscles that circle the head where a crown would sit

  • Nutrition intake such as Magnesium

  • Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) *

 

*50 -80 percent of the time people who use this technique get relief and in many cases, the relief is complete and permanent. Some migraine sufferers may need an EFT expert to help them perform the technique.
